As Taiwan's renewable energy share grows year by year, the intermittency of solar and wind power has become the biggest challenge for grid stability. Energy storage systems are the key infrastructure to solve this problem. Shi-He Intelligent's MW-scale storage facility in southern Taiwan is on the front line of this power transformation.
Why does the grid need energy storage?
Solar generates power during the day but not at night. Wind power depends on wind speed, which fluctuates constantly. When renewable energy exceeds 20% of the mix, this intermittency causes grid frequency fluctuations that can potentially lead to large-scale blackouts.
Energy storage acts as the grid's buffer: absorbing excess power when renewables overproduce and rapidly releasing it when supply falls short, maintaining grid frequency at a stable 60Hz.
What is dReg frequency regulation service?
Taipower's power trading platform offers various ancillary services. Among them, dReg (Dynamic Regulation Reserve) requires storage systems to respond within milliseconds of detecting frequency deviation. This is thousands of times faster than the minute-level response of traditional thermal generators.
Storage operators participating in dReg services receive capacity and performance payments from Taipower, making it one of the most stable revenue models for energy storage investment.
What is the biggest challenge in building MW-scale storage?
One word: safety.
With large quantities of lithium batteries concentrated together, thermal management and fire safety design are critical. We employ a multi-tier fire suppression system: the first tier detects individual cell thermal runaway, the second tier provides cabinet-level gas detection and suppression, and the third tier covers the entire facility.
Combined with Shi-He Intelligent's proprietary EMS, we monitor every cell's temperature, voltage, and SOC (State of Charge) in real time, issuing early warnings before anomalies develop, ensuring safe and stable operation at millisecond response speeds.
What is the ROI for storage investment?
Based on current Taipower dReg rate structures, the payback period for MW-scale storage systems is approximately 5-7 years, after which revenue is essentially pure profit. As Taiwan pushes toward its 2050 net-zero target, storage demand will only continue to grow — now is the ideal time to invest.
Shi-He Intelligent provides end-to-end services from system design and construction to Taipower platform registration, helping investors enter the storage market with optimal configurations.
